Castelion Raises $1B to Scale Low-Cost Hypersonic Production

Castelion started with an unusually ambitious premise: advanced defense hardware should move from design to production with the speed associated with modern technology companies. Less than four years later, the California company has pushed Blackbeard from a clean-sheet concept toward military production, built its own manufacturing infrastructure, and secured more than $500 million in U.S. military contracts. Its latest challenge is no longer proving that the approach can work. It is proving that it can manufacture at industrial scale.
Castelion has announced a $1 billion Series C at a $13 billion valuation. The financing includes $800 million in equity co-led by JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group, Andreessen Horowitz and Carlyle-managed funds, alongside a $250 million committed revolving credit facility. Lightspeed, Lavrock, Altimeter, General Catalyst and Interlagos returned, while T. Rowe Price joined as a new investor.
The company was founded by former SpaceX leaders Bryon Hargis, Sean Pitt and Andrew Kreitz. Their backgrounds span national-security programs, launch and human-spaceflight sales, classified-program finance and aerospace manufacturing. That experience shaped Castelion around rapid testing, vertical integration and designing hardware for production from the beginning rather than treating manufacturing as a later-stage problem.
The new capital will expand production of Blackbeard, Castelion’s lower-cost hypersonic strike system, while increasing manufacturing capacity at its 1,000-acre Project Ranger campus in New Mexico. The company is also developing a longer-range strike system and additional defensive products built around the same manufacturing philosophy.
That production focus is what separates this round from an ordinary defense-tech financing. Castelion already has a government framework targeting at least 500 Blackbeard systems annually after testing and validation, while operational fielding is targeted for 2027.
Castelion is now testing whether defense innovation can be treated as a repeatable manufacturing system. If it succeeds, its most important contribution may be demonstrating that advanced weapons can move from development to meaningful production quantities without inheriting the timelines and economics that have defined traditional programs.
