Microsoft is offering a generous exit package to roughly 60,000 employees who agree to quit on their own – part of a quiet, deliberate workforce shrinkage driven by its enormous AI spending. Accepting is optional; the real risk is in staying.
What exactly is the Voluntary Exit Offer?
The offer is simple: leave now, and Microsoft pays you extra to do it. On October 26, the company announced the program and emailed a personal offer to eligible employees – “If you’re thinking of leaving the company anyway, leave now and we’ll pay you extra money to do it.”
Reports say around 60,000 people out of Microsoft’s 223,000 employees were included more than one in four workers at the company. Everyone who got an email has until early December to make up their mind.
Because it’s spending unimaginable money on AI and needs to save cash elsewhere
The driver is AI: $175 billion of planned 2026 spending has to be paid for somehow, and salaries are the biggest quick-cut cost.
Microsoft is in the middle of the biggest spending spree in its history, building the data centers and computer chips that power AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT-style services. That’s more than the annual economic output of most countries.
