Sofab Inks Raises $6M to Solve Perovskite Solar’s Reliability Problem

Perovskite solar has already demonstrated strong efficiency. The harder problem is keeping the technology stable when modules become larger and move outside the laboratory.
Sofab Inks has raised $6 million in seed funding to scale its specialty materials platform for perovskite solar manufacturing. Cloudberry Ventures led the round. The company plans to expand production capacity and triple its engineering team as it moves toward full-size commercial modules.
Replacing the weakest layer
Sofab Inks focuses on an electron transport layer commonly made from C60 fullerene.
The company argues that this layer creates two major problems: voltage loss and weak mechanical adhesion. As modules scale, the interface can crack or delaminate, limiting durability and commercial deployment.
Sofab’s TinFab material replaces fullerene with metal-oxide nanoparticles. The company says these particles bond six to ten times more strongly than C60 and have delivered 22.3% efficiency on 30-centimeter single-junction modules. It is now preparing to scale the technology for modules measuring up to one by two meters.
The commercial significance lies in reliability. Perovskite cells can deliver high performance using films far thinner than silicon and can be produced at lower temperatures, opening applications across lightweight solar, curved surfaces, vehicles, satellites and connected devices. But those markets require materials that remain stable beyond early demonstrations.
Moving toward high-volume manufacturing
Sofab Inks was spun out of the University of Louisville’s Conn Center for Renewable Energy with support from the US Department of Energy.
The company reports commercial engagement or advanced discussions with approximately 90% of the perovskite industry, including APS, Energy Materials Corporation, Halocell and SunXT. Arizona State University researchers also reported that TinFab increased fracture energy by roughly five times in tested perovskite devices. These results are partner and company-reported rather than independently audited commercial performance data.
The new funding will support the transition from material validation into high-velocity production. That includes expanding engineering capacity and managing a scale-up that could increase manufacturing volume by as much as 100 times.
Why the timing matters
Global electricity demand is rising as transport, manufacturing, heating and AI data centers place more pressure on power systems.
Perovskite-silicon tandem solar could improve the output of utility-scale installations without requiring proportionally more land or supporting infrastructure. Lightweight perovskite films may also bring solar generation into applications where conventional silicon panels are too heavy or rigid.
The pressure point is no longer only cell efficiency. It is whether manufacturers can produce large modules that survive real operating conditions.
The market signal
Sofab Inks represents a broader shift in climate technology investment: capital is moving into specialized materials that remove manufacturing bottlenecks rather than funding only finished energy products.
The company is not building complete solar panels. It is attempting to become a critical materials supplier across the emerging perovskite ecosystem.
The next test will be whether TinFab can maintain its reported efficiency and mechanical stability at commercial scale, while meeting the cost, consistency and lifetime requirements expected by solar manufacturers.
If Sofab succeeds, its value may come from making perovskite solar not only more efficient—but dependable enough to manufacture at scale.
