A restaurant can lose a customer before anyone tastes the food.

The loss can happen in search, on a slow website, inside a confusing checkout flow or because the restaurant never brings that customer back. Owner has built a $2.3 billion company around reducing how many of those digital decisions a local-business owner has to make personally.

The company has raised a $240 million Series D led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives, with Meritech, Redpoint, Headline and Jack Altman also participating. Owner says 100 million+ consumers have used its platform, while it ranks in the top 10% of startups for both growth and efficiency and the top 0.5% by revenue.

The idea started somewhere much smaller than a restaurant chain.

Co-founder and CEO Adam Guild first built software to help his mother’s struggling dog-grooming business. Owner says the technology helped turn that business around. Guild later partnered with CTO Dean Bloembergen, who had previously built technology for restaurant companies and served as CTO of restaurant-tech startup Marble.

That origin still shows up in Owner’s product philosophy.

Most business software gives customers more settings. Owner deliberately removes some of them.

Restaurants can control their identity, but they cannot freely change elements such as CTA placement, information hierarchy or order-conversion flows. Owner uses those standardized surfaces to run thousands of split tests and push better-performing patterns across its network.

The trade-off is unusually explicit:

less customization, more optimization.

Owner reports that its websites convert visitors into customers 146% better on average, increase online traffic by 40% within 30 days, and see mobile-app users reorder at 2X the rate of non-app users. It also says customers average roughly 40% growth in first-party online orders after one year. These are company-reported results.

Talkin’ Tacos gives those numbers some physical scale. Owner says the restaurant grew from one to 34 locations in 4.5 years and now processes more than $1 million per month through the platform.

The deeper shift is from tools to decisions.

Owner describes its software as agentic because the system increasingly decides how a restaurant’s digital experience should improve rather than asking the operator to configure every step. Adam Guild captured that direction when introducing its Grader product:

“Introducing Grader: the world’s first AI CMO for restaurants.”

Owner says more than 90% of customers now receive value from its Grader and Website Generator before buying, while its free AI tools also help the company see where demand is emerging outside restaurants.

That matters because restaurants may only be the proving ground.

Owner estimates 645,000 independent US restaurants spend roughly $44 billion annually on technology, marketing and payments. International restaurants expand that opportunity to $105 billion, while adding salons, grocers, spas and other brick-and-mortar businesses pushes its estimated market to $785 billion.

For years, software gave small businesses more dashboards, more settings and more decisions.

Owner is betting the next generation wins by making more of those decisions disappear.
